Sig P230 Vs. P232: What's the Difference?

The Sig P230 and P232 are two of the early models of handguns by Sig Sauer. The P230 is older than the P232 and hugely inspired by the seminal Walther Model PP handgun. The compact firearm stood apart for its precision and reliability but was replaced after almost two decades by the Sig P232, which featured major refinements.

Sig P230 Vs. P232 Size and Design

The Sig P230 is a classic blowback pistol made in 1977. It has a fixed barrel, a narrow slide, and a frame and can be carried in an ankle holster easily. In 1996, the Sig P232 replaced the P230. The P232 is again a blowback-operated pistol, with a 3.6" barrel and a weight of 17.6 oz with a 7-round mag. There is no difference between the length and height of these pistols. The only slight variation is in weight, with the P230 being slightly heavier, at 18.5 oz than the P232.

Sig P230 VS P232 Ergonomics

Both the guns are comfortable and easy to handle. However, for extended shooting, the Sig P232 is more suitable. The smooth and flat grip panels on the P230 do not provide the needed traction to some users. Many choose to upgrade the grip with aftermarket parts.

The Sig P232 has a much more ergonomic grip, which facilitates ease of shooting. It also has a stout recoil spring. Moreover, the Wundhammer-type swell in the grip's center creates a more natural fit in the user's hand. This contributes to improved control and comfort when firing. Both the pistols are autoloading, but between them, the Sig P232 is easiest to use.

Number and Depth of Slide Serrations

The Sig P232 has a smaller number of slide serrations than the P230. It has seven broad and deep slide serrations, which are vertical or perpendicular, compared to 12 narrow slide serrations in the Sig P230.

Slide serrations in the P230 allow for a basic grip surface to use the slide. However, they don't give as much traction as deeper slide serrations in the P232, which facilitate a more secure grip and more significant ability to manipulate slides.

Safety Controls

There are not many differences in the safety controls of Sig P230 and P232. They have a double-action/single-action trigger system, which leads to a consistent and uninterrupted trigger pull with every shot. There is no external manual safety in these pistols. The double-action pull of the trigger is quite stiff and long compared to the single-action pull.

In the Sig P232, many safety systems are used, including the decocking lever, a loaded chamber indicator, the hammer safety intercept notch, a disconnector, and the firing pin safety lock. These controls are designed to be reached easily by armed professionals.

Similarly, in the Sig P230, the decocking lever enables the cocked hammer to be lowered securely until the sear engages a safety intercept notch. This prevents the gun from firing. It also does not require you to press the trigger and defeat the other mechanical safeties in the handgun.

A major difference is in the action of these pistols. The P232 has three hammer positions. These include full rest, half cock, and fully cocked. In P232, there are two hammer positions, single-action cocked and double-action de-cocked.

Sig P230 VS P232 Caliber and Capacity

The capacity of the two pistols is almost the same. While the P230 holds 8 + 1 rounds for .32 ACP and 7+1 rounds for .380 ACP, the P232 holds 7 . 380 Auto rounds. The Sig P232 also used the .380 ACP beside .32 ACP and 9x18mm Ultra. Similar is the case with the P230, which uses .380 ACP & 9mm Ultra for 7-round magazine. Another difference is in the material of the magazine floor plates. The P230 factory magazine floor plates are made of aluminum, while those of the P232 are plastic.

Differences in Sights

The Sig 230 comes with fixed front and rear sights. They have the conventional Sig design and configuration. You will find a dot on the front sight and a rectangle on the rear one. When you align the dot over the rectangle, you can aim the shot.

The P232 used the SIGLITE tritium night sights. These high-visibility sights are much more effective than those found in many competitive pistols. Due to these sights, the accuracy of the gun increases more than the Sig 230. The P230's basic sights are not as user-friendly as the Sig P232's for precise target acquisition.

Differences in Accuracy Between Sig P230 Vs. P232

There are minor differences in accuracy between the Sig P230 and P232. They come from the grip design, depth of slide serrations, and sights. The grip design of the P232 is much more rounder and fuller than the P230. Also, the deeper slide serrations on its slide impart a firmer grip when racking the slide. It contributes to greater accuracy.

The sights in the P232 also lead to better accuracy. The three-dot sights are adjustable compared to the fixed front and rear sights in the P230. It also has dovetail sights, which can safely fit a rear sight.

Recoil Management

Both guns give a similar type of recoil primarily because they are blowback pistols. However, the less ergonomic frame of the P230 may cause you to experience more recoil, similar to the Glock 43.
